Jun/24 - Widgets Preference Pane for Mac OS X
Ego Systems has released a free utility called the Widgets Preference Pane, which as the name describes adds a new pane to your Mac OS X Preferences that allows you to manage your Dashboard widgets. Key highlights include:
- See all of your installed Widgets and deactivate, activate or delete any of them.
- Install new Widgets with a simple drag and drop.
- Secure both the System and User Widget folders via Tiger's new Access Control List (ACL) security system.
- Control Safari's "Open Safe Files" function.
- Disable the Dashboard completely.
- Allow Widgets on the Desktop.
- Change the the Dashboard shelf graphic. (We even provide 4 great new graphics to get you started!)
To quote their website: "Unlike similar utilities, there's no rebooting required and no logging
out and back in. Everything happens immediately, and you control it all
from one convenient preference pane. (As an added bonus, a Universal
Binary version of the Widgets Preference Pane is included on the disk
image.)"
Jun/24 - Web Services Find a New Home: Dashboard
Ben Ramsey weighs in on Dashboard and states that "[Dashboard] is pioneering a revolution" in desktop-web integration. Ben describes Dashboard as a thin-client gateway to constantly-updated information on the Web, accessed in a streamlined manner via Web Services programmed in ordinary Javascript and represented in standard HTML.
Jun/13 - Mac OS X 10.4.2 to Enhance Dashboard Functionality
According to AppleInsider, the next maintenance release of Apple's Mac OS X 10.4.2 "Tiger" will include new features that will make Dashboard simpler and safer. Specifically, the update is purported to include the ability to delete widgets, a new widget installer which will let users "test drive" widgets in isolation prior to installing them, as well as over six-dozen other fixes.
