Widgets Preference Pane for Mac OS X
Ego Systems has released a free utility called the Widgets Preference Pane, which as the name describes adds a new pane to your Mac OS X Preferences that allows you to manage your Dashboard widgets.  Key highlights include:

  • See all of your installed Widgets and deactivate, activate or delete any of them.
  • Install new Widgets with a simple drag and drop.
  • Secure both the System and User Widget folders via Tiger's new Access Control List (ACL) security system.
  • Control Safari's "Open Safe Files" function.
  • Disable the Dashboard completely.
  • Allow Widgets on the Desktop.
  • Change the the Dashboard shelf graphic. (We even provide 4 great new graphics to get you started!)
To quote their website: "Unlike similar utilities, there's no rebooting required and no logging out and back in. Everything happens immediately, and you control it all from one convenient preference pane. (As an added bonus, a Universal Binary version of the Widgets Preference Pane is included on the disk image.)"

Apple Switching to Intel
Steve Jobs announced in his keynote speech today at the WWDC that Apple Computers will be switching to Intel processors in 2006.  Jobs revealed that Mac OS X has privately been running on Intel processors for the last 5 years, and now the long-rumoured transition from IBM processors is official.  Apple will be providing tools to make the transition as seamless as possible for software developers, including Rosetta, a dymanic binary translator that runs PowerPC code on Intel processors with no significant performance decrease.  For more info, visit MacNN's live WWDC event coverage page.

Widget Manager v1.1.0
Downtown Software House recently released a free utility called Widget Manager, which is a preference pane for Mac OS X 10.4 which allows you to "inspect, remove, and disabled Dashboard Widgets."  Also from the description on their web site:

"Widget Manager is a convenient way to manage all the Widgets on your system, including the standard Apple Widgets. Since it handles removing the .wdgt file as well as restarting Dashboard, Widget Manager eliminates Dashboard display issues when you remove a Widget by hand, and is also a great defense against potentially harmful Widgets."

A First Dashboard Security Compromise
As reported today on Slashdot, a new widget named Zaptastic has been created as a proof-of-concept that web sites can cause Safari to automatically download and install a Dashboard widget in its default state.  The following web site link will install this widget, and it apparently can't be removed without manually removing the file from your Library folder and rebooting your computer.

To tighten your security, open Safari's Preferences and uncheck the option on the first screen that says "Open 'safe' files after downloading".  Probably not a bad idea to do anyway.

Widgets Gone Wild
Mesa Dynamics introduces the Amnesty Widget Browser, a utility for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger that allows Dashboard widgets to live directly on your Desktop via a convenient icon in your system menu bar.  This allows for rapid testing for widget developers, or just a convenient way to sample new widgets outside of Dashboard.
