Improving this site - Posted: April 14, 2005 - 5:21 PM Quote and reply
We've had a very positive number of visitors to this site over the past few days, however no one has yet posted any widgets, messages in the forum, or how-to information. I've been trying to figure out why this is, and how to make people want to participate better. For one, I understand that most people don't have Dashboard yet (although you can still create and try out widgets using Safari in the meantime), and that after April 29th, the masses should be ready to start writing widgets and getting them out there (although ADC members can access Dashboard already).

Here's the list of things I'm going to do over the next while to improve the site:

* Add much-needed screenshots to the widget listings.
* Make the home page a list of the top widgets.
* Make the widget categories listed in the sidebar at all times.

What else would you guys suggest I do to improve the service offered by this site?

A good howto on how to actually create widgets would help. Also an XCode template for building widgets with Cocoa plugins would make it much easier to start.

I've added your site to my list of Dashboard Widgets Resources at http://www.dori.com/dashboard/. A reciprocal link would be great, but it's not required.

Hi Daniel,

I like it! Since I've had two submissions for designs, both of which I quite like, I guess I'll have to rig something up to switch between them at random for now. Maybe I should hold a vote after that, or provide a theme switcher. I'll have to think about that one...

Thanks for the design though. I should be able to add it to the site soon.

Cheers,

Lux

As long as it's a png, gif, or jpg and it's under 200x200 pixels, you shouldn't have a problem. If you do, let me know and I'll look into it.

Cheers,

Widget-related tools section - Posted: July 21, 2005 - 10:17 PM Quote and reply
One thing that this site could use, is a section for tools that are not widgets, but are widget related.

For example, I have created a UNIX shell script that will CORRECTLY add cities to the World Clock widget (localized to your choice of languages). Many people have heard about it, contacted me via our web site feedback form and downloaded the file from our site. At this time though, it is the only place that you can get it. I am also finishing up a script, with 2 .png files that will add Cartman to the Hula widget and I'm working on Mr. Hankey.

Since these are shell scripts, that actually modify existing widgets, there is no place to post them on any of the widget sites.

FYI, if you manually added your city to the World Clock widget in OS-X 10.4, you probably noticed that your changes got wiped out when Apple released 10.4.1 and again, when they released 10.4.2. The shell script that I mentioned above, once configured, will not only add your city to the World Clock widget, but will do it again, with only a few keystrokes, every time Apple updates that widget. The comments in the shell script also correct some misconceptions that have been posted all over the web, about how to add a city to the World Clock widget.

I'm sure that others have shell scripts, AppleScripts and other tools that are widget related that they would like to post, as well.
